Christmas is a significant Christian festival that falls on 25 December. It is celebrated with much pomp and reverence across the globe because it represents the birth of Lord Jesus Christ. While traditions and celebrations of Christmas vary in their forms in various countries and cultures, its basic message is that of peace, love, and goodwill.
Followers of Christianity celebrate December 25 as the birth of Lord Jesus. But some historians believe that Jesus was not actually born on this day; it is only symbolic. There is no such date in the Bible of the exact birth date of Jesus. The birth date of Jesus Christ is assumed to be on December 25, and this day is celebrated as Christmas.
In India, this festival of Christmas is especially celebrated among the Christian families, but people of other religions also celebrate with enthusiasm this festival now. On Christmas day, the house and church are decorated with a focus on decorating Christmas trees and putting small lamps. People decorate their homes with flowers and leaves found in gardens and prepare sweet dishes in various ways.
The history of Christmas is related to the birth of Jesus Christ. As per the Bible, Lord Jesus was born in Bethlehem. His mother, Mother Mary, and his father, Joseph, had gone to Bethlehem for the census. There, Jesus was born. It is said that Jesus was placed in a manger, and this day was announced by angels. According to this announcement, Jesus Christ came as the Savior.
However, historians said that Christmas has its roots before it was associated with Christianity. The term Christmas is believed to be linked with the previously celebrated Roman festival “Sanctualia”. During this festival, the Sun God was worshiped, and after the preaching of Christianity, a tradition was made to celebrate it as Jesus’ birthday.
The reason for celebrating Christmas on December 25 is linked with Roman history. In the year 137, the Roman Bishop had declared a day to celebrate Christmas. Later, in the year 350, the priest Julius decided to celebrate Christmas on December 25. This was the day earlier celebrated as the birthday of the Sun God. After the preaching of Christianity, it started being celebrated as the day of birth of Jesus.
The presence of Santa Claus is also important at Christmas time. The real name of Santa Claus is Saint Nicholas, who was a religious man from Turkey. He used to help the poor and the needy and due to his generosity, his image comes out in the form of Santa Claus today. It is also believed that Santa Claus lives in his palace at the North Pole and delivers gifts to children on Christmas night.
