The New York Mets made a huge splash by signing outfielder Juan Soto to a record-breaking $765 million contract. There’s hope the Mets can also re-sign homegrown All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso to protect Soto in the lineup. But will the New York Yankees convince him to change boroughs and call the Bronx home instead?
Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns has publicly said the club would like to re-sign Alonso. Team owner Steve Cohen is also hopeful the 30-year-old remains in Queens for 2025 and beyond. Now that Soto is officially signed, Alonso’s market of interested teams will take shape.
The Yankees have an obvious hole at first base. That area of the diamond was a black hole for them in 2024. Anthony Rizzo took up most of the playing time, and he’s now a free agent after the Bombers declined to exercise his $17 million option. After watching their crosstown rivals sign Soto away from them, will Yankees general manager Brian Cashman return the favor by landing Alonso on a big-money deal?
Alonso and the Yankees reportedly have some level of mutual interest. Bleacher Report’s Erik Beaston thinks the slugging first baseman will ultimately stay in New York but spurn the Mets to sign with the Bombers.
Spotrac has pegged Alonso’s market value for a long-term deal at six years and $174 million. Several other teams have been linked to him this winter, including the Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros and Washington Nationals. Depending on how competitive the bidding gets, Alonso could top that number with his next contract.
