MP Tsvangirayi Under Fire for Response to Lake Chivero Fishing Suspension

Zimbabweans React Angrily to MP Tsvangirayi’s Response to Suspension of Fishing in Lake Chivero

The suspension of fishing activities in Lake Chivero, following reports of severe water contamination from raw sewage, has sparked widespread public outcry. Norton MP Richard Tsvangirayi is at the centre of the controversy after his comments on the matter drew sharp criticism from Zimbabweans on social media. Many have described his stance as insensitive and out of touch with the health risks posed by the polluted waters.

MP Tsvangirayi’s Statement

In response to the government’s decision to halt fishing, Tsvangirayi expressed concerns about the livelihoods of those who depend on fishing in Lake Chivero. Writing on Twitter, he stated:

“The suspension of fishing at Lake Chivero is a serious blow to the livelihoods of many fishermen in Norton Constituency, the majority of whom are youth. I urge the Government to fast-track investigations and provide immediate support for affected families. Let’s act swiftly to protect both lives and livelihoods.”

However, this comment was met with backlash as many Zimbabweans argued that the health risks of consuming contaminated fish far outweighed the economic concerns.

Critics accused Tsvangirayi of prioritising livelihoods over lives, given the serious consequences of the water contamination.

ZimParks’s Official Position

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) issued a statement explaining the rationale behind the suspension. The press release reads:

“All fishing activities in Lake Chivero have been suspended with immediate effect following the deaths of fish due to the contamination of water. The suspension serves as a precautionary measure and will pave the way for relevant Government departments and our Research and Scientific Services team to investigate more and determine whether the consumption of the fish poses risk to humans.”

“During this time, we are increasing anti-poaching patrols and law enforcement in areas around the lake to prevent any fish reaching the market.”

Social Media Backlash

Zimbabweans took to social media in droves to voice their disapproval of Tsvangirayi’s statement. Many questioned the MP’s priorities and highlighted the long-standing issue of raw sewage being discharged into Lake Chivero by the City of Harare.

Aaron Ndlara (@AaronNdlara) called out the lack of action against the sewage problem:

“When are you going to suspend the pumping of sewage to residents?”

King Jay (@KingJayZim) labelled Tsvangirayi’s remarks as outrageous:

“Given the well-known health risks to both humans and wildlife, this post right here is outrageous!”

Mr Enjoyment (@_gully_45) took a harsher tone:

“For how long has raw sewer been pumped into the lake? You knew and saw this happening. What did you do?”

ChiheraStacey (@StaceyFadzayi) accused the MP of political posturing:

“A missed chance to remain silent. An unfortunate tweet from an MP. This is political posturing!”

Trevor Makonyonga (@TheMakonyonga) highlighted the gravity of the situation:

“What is more important here, lives or livelihoods?”

Dr. K (@DrK3819) questioned whether such leadership could bring meaningful change:

“Can we expect better for Zimbabwe if such minds are in parliament?”

Others, like Tinavoishe Gumbi (@GumbiTinavo), expressed their frustration with misplaced priorities:

“Your priorities are misplaced, Hon. Please remove this outrageous post! Do you know how many people would die if that suspension did not take place?”

Sheldon Cooper’s Fan (@missroyalcourt) added:

“So you’re saying people should keep fishing in poisoned water because youth need money? This suspension was so necessary.”

Following the backlash from Zimbabweans, MP Tsvangirayi released a statement clarifying his earlier remarks.  He insisted he was against fishing in the polluted waters and that his only concern was for the government to provide support for the people who have been affected by the ban on fishing.

It seems there’s been some misunderstanding about my recent comments regarding the crisis at Lake Chivero. Let me be absolutely clear: I am NOT advocating for people to fish in contaminated waters. My statement focused on the urgent need for the government to intervene and provide a sustainable solution that protects both lives and livelihoods. Fishing has been a way of life for generations in Norton, sustaining families, paying school fees, and providing essential income for healthcare. The sudden prohibition without a clear alternative is a devastating blow to those who depend on the lake for survival. We cannot ignore the reality that people will risk their lives out of sheer desperation—this underscores the need for immediate, targeted support. I stand by my call for a solution that addresses both the contamination and the economic impact on our community. The two are interconnected, and one cannot be solved without addressing the other. The government must take the necessary measures to save LIVES and LIVELIHOOD.
