National Education Day falls on 11 November every year as Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s birthday. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was the first education minister of independent India and contributed very much to laying the foundation stone for the Indian education system. This day is used to explain the importance of education and honor the contribution of Maulana Azad.
The celebration of National Education Day started in 2008, when the Ministry of Human Resource Development now Ministry of Education announced that they would celebrate Maulana Abul Kalam Azads’ birth anniversary, 11 November, as National Education Day. Maulana Azad has taken many important steps to strengthen the Indian education system. His contribution still impacts Indian society through education policy and institutions.
Maulana Azad understood the importance of education at the time of India’s fight for independence and he came up with many plans to ensure every common person had access to education. He wished each Indian quality education to bring forth a kind of equality in society. In fact, he also came up with various institutions as soon as he came aboard as India’s first Education Minister in the year 1947 which included some very prominent institutes such as IIT, UGC and also Sahitya Akademi.

This day reminds the country of its roots in its education system and the vision of Maulana Azad who, at his end, extended education by treating it as a democratic right.
