Nationwide Recall of Protein Powder Due to Allergy Risk

Chocolate-flavored protein powder is being recalled after a customer reported having an allergic reaction to it.

California-based Orgain is voluntarily recalling a single batch of its chocolate-flavored 30g Plant Protein, Complete Protein Powder because it might contain undeclared peanut residue.

The company has said it conducted a complete review of the production process for this batch and found no discrepancies, but has initiated the recall “out of an abundance of caution.”

No other illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported in connection with this product.

Newsweek has approached Orgain for comment via email form, outside of their regular hours.

Individuals who are allergic to peanuts have immune systems that react to peanuts, with symptoms that might include skin reactions, itching or tingling in the mouth or throat, digestive problems such as diarrhea, runny nose, tightening of the throat and shortness of breath.

In severe cases, people with food allergies may go into anaphylaxis—and peanuts are the most common cause of anaphylactic allergic reactions.

Anaphylaxis may involve difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue and throat, a drop in blood pressure, a rapid pulse, dizziness, lightheadedness or a loss of consciousness.

Individuals experiencing an allergic reaction should be administered with adrenaline—otherwise known as epinephrine—such as with an EpiPen and an ambulance should be called.

The recall involves a single batch of the protein powder, which was distributed nationwide in retail stores and online, after July 16, 2024.

The product was sold in 2.01lb gray plastic tubs with blue labels, that had the expiration date “06/20/26” and product lot code “4172-02-P” on the underside.

Orgain and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are advising all customers to stop using the product immediately.

However, aside from possible contamination that may affect those with peanut allergies, there does not seem to be a health risk posed to the general public from this product.

This recall was called by Orgain and announced by the FDA on Thursday.

Consumers who would like to arrange for a refund may contact the Orgain Consumer Care Team by calling “888-881-4246” or emailing “support@orgain.com” from 8:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. PT, Monday to Friday.

Other allergy-related recalls include potato chips, candies and chocolate bars that may contain undeclared milk.

The most recent recalls include supplements that contain potentially deadly prescription diabetes drugs, salmon that may be contaminated with listeria bacteria and bread that may be contaminated with metal.
