New York Yankees reach major Gerrit Cole decision after opting out of $144m contract following World Series loss

NEW YORK YANKEES star Gerrit Cole is set to stay despite opting out of his $144million deal over the weekend.

The Yankees had the option to extend Cole’s deal, which had four years left, by another season which would cost $36m.

According to The Mail, however, New York are going to keep their star pitcher who will continue on his current deal and discuss an extension another time.

This comes after the Yankees’ shocking collapse that saw them lose the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday at Yankee Stadium.

And Cole played a major role in his team’s remarkable defeat to the Dodgers.

With bases loaded but with two outs, the 34-year-old failed to cover first base when Mookie Betts threw the ball low to Anthony Rizzo.

If the American star had done so, it would have been an easy out but instead LA went to tie the game at 5-5.

And then the Dodgers won 7-6 to claim their eighth World Series title.

Cole said: “I just didn’t know how hard he hit it and by the time the ball got by me, I was not in a position to cover first.

“Neither of us were based on the spin of the baseball and [Rizzo] having to secure it. Just a bad read off the bat.”

This comes after the Yankees opted against firing head coach Aaron Boone despite their disastrous World Series defeat.

Boone came under fire for various reasons, such as the fact his star player Aaron Judge hit just .222 in the World Series and an even-worse .184 overall in the postseason.

The American was also criticised for his decision to play Nestor Cortes in the 10th inning of a high-leverage Game 1.

The Yankees boss turned to Cortes on the mound even though he hadn’t pitched since September 18.

And his decision backfired as his player allowed a walk-off Grand Slam to Freddie Freeman.
