A POPULAR supermarket chain announced it is closing 31 stores across five states.
The company has already shuttered locations since announcing the closures in May.

Stop & Shop closed a store in Newton, Massachusetts, on August 29, and 31 others are on the chopping block.
“Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand,” company president Gordon Reid said in a statement.
Locations in New Jersey, Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island will close by November 2.
Reid said the closures will improve the business overall.
“Stop & Shop is focused on growing through large, multi-year price investments and a stronger customer value proposition, both in-store and online,” he said.
“This means we’ll be focused on delivering lower everyday prices, as well as even more savings for our customers through strong promotions.”
Since 2018, Stop & Shop has remodeled over 190 stores with the shopping experience in mind.
Those stores are outperforming others, and the company hopes to repeat the success at other locations.
“We’re taking these learnings and implementing them at other stores as we build upon our strong foundation,” Reid said.
CRANKY CUSTOMERS
Stop & Shop wanted locals to know about the closures “well in advance,” but they haven’t taken kindly to the news.
New Jersey residents are losing 10 locations, much to their horror.
“The town is going to have nothing left,” wrote Michael Franzone in a Facebook post about the Howell and Jackson stores.
“I was hoping Howell would stay open. ShopRite will raise prices once again,” commented another shopper.
The Howell Township is about an hour east of Philadelphia.

Stop & Shop has announced the closure of 32 location in the Northeast.
All the stores will be closed on or before November 2.

Customers in Massachusetts blamed the closures on nearby rival Aldi.
Other residents blamed crime in the area as the reason for the closures.
“City needs to work on making that area better, otherwise more businesses will continue to close,” one person wrote on Facebook.
“Why should they stay open and pay to heat, cool, and stock a building with few sales and high theft?” another commented.
Other locations closing include Brockton, Halifax, Newton, Pembroke, Raynham, Shrewsbury, and Springfield.
