Remembrance Day fundraiser launches Spitfire poppy display outside her home

REMEMBRANCE Day fundraiser Fiona Matthews made a flying start with her Spitfire of 1,500 crocheted poppies.

The 56-year-old art shop worker, whose dad was in the RAF, has it on the wall of her home in Dorchester, Dorset.

She has raised £300 for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Meanwhile, Prince William’s team Aston Villa are the first Premier League club to sell out of special Royal British Legion footie poppy badges.

To boost donations for their annual appeal for military veterans, the Royal British Legion has created special football club Poppy pins, and nearly 70 teams are taking part.

Poppies with names of teams in the Premier League, Championship and EFL are being sold for £4 each in club stores at grounds and on the official online Poppy Shop.

Nearly 70 teams from Arsenal to Wrexham are taking part.
And big-hearted Villa fans are top of the table as they have already sold all their poppy sports pins.

Newcastle may sell out today at their home game against Arsenal.

The Toon’s rivals Sunderland are top of the Championship, while EFL clubs like Carlisle United, Northampton Town and Oxford United are also in the Poppy League for selling out.

This weekend and next players in football matches across UK will wear poppies on their shirts which will be auctioned off by the RBL.

Last year match worn shirt sales raised nearly £1million.

A British Legion spokesman said: “All profits from sports pin sales go the RBL so we can continue our vital work but many clubs are selling out so get yours while you can.”

This year’s Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal aims to raise £50million and is highlighting the mental scars of military service.
