The Defence Ministry is backing the Royal Thai Air Force‘s (RTAF) decision to select Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets over the American F-16 aircraft, as announced by Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
Phumtham, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister, provided insights into the 19 billion baht (US$547 million) plan for acquiring four new fighter jets. The RTAF has opted for Gripen jets for an additional squadron.
The RTAF currently operates two types of fighter jets: the Gripen and the F-16, both of which are capable of safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty. The RTAF has been given the autonomy to choose the model they deem most appropriate for national defence.
This decision followed a performance demonstration of both models during Children’s Day at the RTAF base in Bangkok.
The procurement process is expected to conclude by the year’s end. Phumtham noted discussions with a Gripen pilot who had experience flying both models, stating that their performance was comparable.
He expressed confidence in the RTAF’s choice, committing to approve the purchase if it aligns with budgetary constraints and includes a technological transfer.
The push to acquire a new squadron was delayed due to budget constraints arising from the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year, the RTAF convened two panels to finalise a review of bids from Saab AB, the Gripen’s manufacturer, and Lockheed Martin, the maker of the F-16.
Before the decision, the US government proposed a low-interest loan to facilitate the purchase of American aircraft. However, the RTAF preferred the Gripen model. Phumtham also communicated with the US Ambassador, clarifying that the government does not intend to borrow for military purchases.
Additionally, an RTAF source revealed plans to test the Gripen’s capabilities on a highway in February. The test aims to assess the jet’s ability to take off or land on roads, should airports be unavailable, reported Bangkok Post.
The Gripen’s short runway requirement—less than 800 metres—was highlighted, with Swedish Air Force tests indicating a landing distance of 500 metres and a takeoff distance of 400 metres. This capability is regarded as a significant advantage for the aircraft.
