WHY doesn’t Zimbabwe senior men’s rugby team coach Piet Benade have a contract? This is the question that has sparked debate within the rugby fraternity.
Benade was appointed Sables coach in March, taking over from Brandon Dawson who resigned last year in December.
Since assuming office, he guided the Sables to lift the 2024 Rugby Africa Cup in August. The achievement marked Zimbabwe’s first Africa Cup trophy in 12 years, thereby ending Namibia’s dominance at the tournament.
What Benade said when asked about his contract
In an interview Benade was asked if he has signed any contract since his appointment in March, the soft spoken coach’s answer shocked many as he revealed that he is yet to receive a contract from the rugby mother body.
“I haven’t signed the contract but that is something which is not bothering me. We have been very busy, planning things so it’s not a distraction at all.
“I believe when the time is right things will be officialised, but for me I trust people when they talk to me and I’m in a good space with the leadership,” said Benade.
Efforts by this publication to get comment from Zimbabwe Rugby Union’s chief executive officer, Sifiso Made, were fruitless by the time of publishing.
