Wind and rain have already begun to pelt the western coastline of Florida, as the outer bands of Hurricane Milton reach the state. Millions of residents have been urged to leave barrier islands and other low-lying areas. Some communities have emptied, while elsewhere in the state, residents prepared by boarding up homes and businesses.
Milton is expected to make landfall around midnight. The precise path of the storm remained uncertain, but officials in Tampa feared a devastating storm surge in the area that could reach 12 to 15 feet, more than double what the city saw during Hurricane Helene last month.
