SFPD: Levo scam costs victims thousands

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Scammers are targeting customers of a local credit union and it’s costing people thousands of dollars.

According to Sioux Falls Police Department spokesman Sam Clemens, scam calls last week cost three different victims more than $11,000, $5,000 and $1,000.

Clemens said the caller ID in the scam calls showed it was Sioux Falls Credit or LEVO Credit Union.

“A lot of similarities in this,” Clemens said about the scam calls. “If you think it is legitimate, don’t provide any information, contact the bank separately.”

Anytime you receive a call that appears to be from a bank and the caller asks for account information, you should ask for a name and a call back number. Then, you should call the bank back using another number that you know is legitimate.

“Scammers are good at what they do,” Clemens said.

Police aren’t sure if the scammers are local or national.
