Sharad Purnima, which is otherwise known as the Purnima of Ashwin month in the Hindu calendar is considered the most special full moon date of the year. It falls on the day of Goddess Lakshmi’s appearance and the completion of 16 phases of the moon, making it a divine festival. This year Sharad Purnima will be celebrated on October 16.
It is believed that this night brought Goddess Lakshmi, thus, the festival needs to be marked as the birthday of Maa Lakshmi. On this night, it is said that Goddess Lakshmi starts to visit her devotees and blesses them with special boons. Those who keep awake with devotion and worship come to experience prosperity and happiness in their lives. This night has also been known as Kojagiri Purnima, meaning “Who is awake?”
On the night of Sharad Purnima, the rays of the moon possess special powers. Ayurveda says that by sitting in the moon’s light and eating kheer, health is improved, and the mind remains stable. It reduces all the negative energies and transmits positive ones.
It is also celebrated as Raasleela between Lord Shri Krishna and Gopis on this particular day. This night is considered when Lord Krishna in the form of divine love danced with gopis.
