Sky Sports cleared over complaints of sectarian chanting from Rangers fans

SKY Sports has been cleared by TV watchdog Ofcom after complaints that sectarian chanting from Rangers supporters was broadcast live on air.

The media regulator was asked to probe coverage of the Ibrox side’s league match against Ross County at Dingwall in December.

Ofcom reviewed the footage after four people complained about offensive singing from sections of the Rangers support during the broadcast.

They have now ruled it did not raise issues that warranted an official investigation under the Broadcasting Code.

The assessors found the exact wording of the chants was not ‘particularly discernible’ to viewers in the context of a live sporting event and did not consider there were grounds to pursue the matter further.

Following the match, which Rangers won 3-0, one viewer wrote on X: “Caught a bit of the Ross County game yesterday, within mins vile sectarian singing from the Rangers end, not a word from the match commentator.

“No ‘we apologise for any offensive chants being heard’ yet if a player swears it’s apology central.”

Another X user posted: “Until it’s challenged by the authorities properly, it’ll continue every week.”

Ofcom said: “After careful assessment, Ofcom has decided not to pursue the complaints because they did not raise issues warranting investigation.”

In 2022, Sky Sports was cleared by Ofcom after abuse aimed at pundit Kris Boyd was broadcast live on air.

The former Rangers striker was targeted with sectarian chants from Celtic fans during coverage of a match against Dundee United at Tannadice.

Sky Sports apologised for the incident during their pre-match coverage that could be heard when Boyd was on air alongside fellow ex-players Shaun Maloney and John Rankin.
