Journalist Shares Zimbabwean Woman’s ‘Rags to Riches’ Story from Maid to Car Owner

Nethonzhe took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to recount his recent Uber ride, which was driven by a Zimbabwean woman. During their conversation, she revealed how she had started as a domestic helper in South Africa and diligently saved her earnings. Over time, her savings allowed her to purchase a car, which she now uses to earn a living as an Uber driver.

The journalist noted that the woman bought her Renault car in cash just three months ago, highlighting her determination and financial discipline.

“This morning, I used an Uber. Driven by a very friendly Zimbabwean 🇿🇼 lady. She told me how she has been a domestic helper since she arrived in SA 🇿🇦 a few years ago. She saved up until she bought the car she uses for Uber. It’s a Renault. She bought it cash three months ago. Wow,” he wrote.

However, many South Africans in the comments section were sceptical. Some questioned whether she truly purchased the car with her savings or implied that she may have stolen it from her employer. Here are some of the reactions:

@abel_bhebhe:

Uber takes cars from 2021 to 2024 older cars don’t qualify, a 2021 car goes for over R150 000. The lady was stealing from the boss or she’s lying about owning the car

@Bus1nessG3nius:

To save about R200 000 enough to buy a decent Uber car, if you were focused and managed to save R3000 a month from a domestic worker’s salary, it will take about 6,5 years. Possible, but remarkable.

@NguluvheKhulu:

Unbelievable, there must be other sources, and you trusted her.

@muzi_mocco:

So which permit is she using that gets to allow her to move from one job to the other and to conduct business?

@goldenMishumo:

She is pushing the “South Africans are lazy” agenda on you. She came here and made it from R0.00. Why didn’t she execute her great plans in Zimbabwe?
