Texas Longhorns tipped to make major Arch Manning decision with ‘lack of confidence’ in Quinn Ewers

THE Texas Longhorns have been predicted to make a move with Arch Manning after the disappointing showing from Quinn Ewers last week.

Ewers struggled and was benched for Arch Manning during the Longhorns‘ 30-15 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs in Week 8.

The 21-year-old Ewers wasn’t effective against Georgia’s defense and Manning entered the game in the second quarter.

However, the change didn’t lead to anything for the Longhorns as Manning didn’t provide a spark.

Ewers took over the offense in the second half after being down 20-0.

On Friday, ESPN’s Paul Finebaum appeared on Get Up and shared his belief that Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian will likely have a quick hook and switch to Manning if the same Ewers struggles against Vanderbilt this weekend.

“I’m watching the quarterback situation because Quinn Ewers was not good last week against Georgia,” Finebaum said about what he’s focusing on in this weekend’s game for the Longhorns.

“Remember, Arch Manning is the No. 2. He’s the best back-up quarterback in America. He could start almost anywhere else.

“So if Ewers struggles, I think he’ll get pulled, or he should get pulled, and we may see the beginning of the Arch Manning era.”

Jonathan Davis of Locked on Longhorns shared his take on the situation Friday, saying that Sarkisian’s decision to bench Ewers was due to a “lack of confidence” in the junior quarterback.

“I think he certainly panicked. I do think that there may be a little bit of lack of confidence in Quinn Ewers,” Davis said on the Locked On podcast.

“But he’s still the quarterback entering Saturday.”

Sarkisian confirmed after the game that Ewers was still the starter.

Still, Davis doesn’t buy the head coach’s claim that they made the move in the second quarter to get Ewers refocused.

“We all know if Arch Manning gets in there in those two drives and scores 14, Quinn Ewers is not getting back in that game. You didn’t do it to calm Quinn Ewers down,” he said.

“You panicked for the first time this season.

“Texas got punched in the mouth and that was Steve Sarkisian’s reaction.”

Ewers returned for the second half and led Texas to a touchdown drive to start the third quarter and a second off a short field.

He still ended the night with five sacks, two fumbles, and an interception.

There will continue to be controversy in Austin if Ewers continues to struggle.

Arch is 58 for 94 for 920 yards with 11 touchdowns and two interceptions.

The son of Cooper Manning and nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning also has three rushing touchdowns.
