A Thai motorcyclist died after riding on a dark and bumpy Sukhumvit Road in Samut Prakan province near Bangkok last night.
Officers from Mueang Samut Prakan Police Station and rescuers from the Samut Prakan Foundation responded to a motorcycle accident on Sukhumvit Road near Thetsaban 1 School in the Paknam sub-district, Mueang district, Samut Prakan, last night, October 21.
The victim, 31 year old Ittiphon, was found lying in the middle of the road with a serious head injury and scratches across his body. His dark blue Honda Click motorcycle overturned on the road. Rescuers performed CPR and rushed him to the hospital but unfortunately, Ittiphon succumbed to his injuries.
Police suspect that a pothole, measuring 80 centimetres wide and 10 centimetres deep, was the cause of the fatal accident. Officers hurried to cover the hole with a sandbag and bitumen to prevent further accidents.
Additionally, the lack of street lighting at the scene may have contributed to the accident. Ittiphon may not have seen the hole in time to avoid it.
The police’s repair was a temporary solution and no information or schedule was provided on when the bumpy road would be properly repaired for the safety of other motorists in the area.
In a similar incident in April, 18 year old Phatthadon Porkhuntod suffered a brain haemorrhage, a broken clavicle, and a head wound after a bumpy section of Chaengwattana Road in Bangkok caused his motorcycle accident.
Locals in the area told Amarin TV that accidents occur at the site three to four times a week due to the potholes. Some motorists lost parts of their vehicles, such as exhaust pipes, while passing through the area.
Another similar accident took place on October 16 in the Isaan province of Khon Kaen, also due to rough road conditions. In that incident, a motorcyclist was rescued after being found sitting on the road, his face covered in blood.
