Thai netizens praised the efforts of two Thai nurses who provided first aid to two unconscious passengers during a flight from Phuket to Bangkok on Friday, December 13.
The events aboard Bangkok Airways flight PG278 came to public attention after the local news Facebook page Phuket Info Centre shared the story. The two medical professionals commended for their actions were identified as registered nurses Kittithat Maitrijit and Wannaporn Maitrijit.
The nurses were passengers on the flight. They were already on board and waiting for the other passengers to take their seats when a foreign man suddenly collapsed near the entrance. Observing the concerned reactions of the flight attendants, the nurses left their seats to assist.
The foreign man lost consciousness. His companion informed the nurses that the man had been experiencing diarrhoea, vomiting, and extreme fatigue. The nurses requested an emergency first aid kit from the airline and treated the man until his condition stabilised.
The standard demonstration of emergency equipment proceeded as usual, and the flight departed from Phuket. However, another emergency arose mid-flight when a female passenger, whose nationality was not disclosed, also lost consciousness.
The woman reportedly consumed her last meal a day earlier and suffered from stomach aches, vomiting more than ten times, and diarrhoea five times before boarding the plane.
The nurses administered fluids intravenously and gave her medication to stop the vomiting. They then moved to sit near the woman to monitor her condition closely.
Both passengers reportedly improved during the flight and were immediately transferred to a hospital upon arrival at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok.
Thai netizens stated that both passengers were lucky to travel with the two nurses and admired the help and support from the two medical workers. The Southern Nursing Association of Thailand also praised the two nurses for their dedication and swift action, which ultimately saved both passengers’ lives.
The cabin crew later told the media that it was highly unusual to face two medical emergencies on the same flight. They also noted that the second incident occurred while the plane was experiencing turbulence due to poor weather conditions.
