A Thai woman survived unscathed after being hit by a train while driving her SUV across a railway track in the central province of Samut Sakhon yesterday. The driver claimed she did not hear or see any warning.
Officers from the Mueang Samut Sakhon Police Station investigated the accident on Soi Ekkachai 36 on Derm Bang Road at about 6am yesterday, August 29. The black MG SUV, with damage to its bumper, was found near the railway track. Its right wheel dipped into the roadside grass, leaving its left rear wheel in the air.
The driver of train number 4303, Wonwienyai-Mahachai, Rachain Srikwanjai, was at the scene, waiting to provide information to the police.
The female SUV driver, Daothana Preeda, got out of the car safely. She explained that she was driving her car from her home in Soi Ekkachai 36 to her workplace as usual. Upon reaching the railway track, she did not hear the signal, and there was no barrier at the spot.
Daothana said she was shocked and confused when her car was hit by the train. She was fortunate not to be injured.
Police revealed to Matichon that while there was no barrier at the location, the area did have a warning signal. There were no officials from the State Railway of Thailand at the scene because it was not an official railway crossing.
There is no report yet on whether the female driver or the train driver will face any legal consequences for the accident.
In a related incident in July, five people were killed and two others were severely injured in a collision between a train and a pickup truck in the Isaan province of Phichit. The pickup was travelling to a temple in the area to attend a funeral, but the driver reportedly ignored the warning sign and signal, leading to the fatal accident.
Another similar accident occurred in the central province of Lopburi in January when a train crashed into a parked pickup truck. The pickup driver was severely injured, while a female passenger managed to jump out of the vehicle in time.
