The driver who injured two people in a crash was tagged and ordered to carry out unpaid work

A teenage driver who put two people in hospital after a horror smash has been ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work.

Abderahmene Naimi, then 19, crashed head-on with Amanda Smith’s vehicle in Glasgow’s Scotstounhill on 28 January 2022.

Naimi, now 21, was unable to see the 56-year-old’s car as he overtook a bus on a road with a blind spot ahead.

The crash caused extensive damage to both vehicles and landed Miss Smith and Naimi’s passenger Mohammed Abrar in hospital.

Miss Smith suffered abdominal bruising and a large hematoma.

Mr. Abrar, meanwhile, suffered a fractured knee as well as tissue damage to his shoulder and back.

Naimi pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to causing serious injury and damage by dangerous driving.

He also admitted a separate charge of driving without insurance.

Sheriff Shona Gilroy tagged Naimi for 80 days, keeping him indoors between 10pm and 6am and imposing unpaid working hours.

Naimi was also banned from driving for 16 months.

The court heard that Naimi – who was behind the wheel of a Peugeot 208 – was traveling near Queen Victoria Drive at around midnight with three passengers in her vehicle.

Miss Smith walked in the opposite direction towards a blind peak in the road.

Prosecutor Danielle McGuinness said: “While within the area of solid white lines, which are visible and last for approximately 40 metres, Naimi crossed onto the wrong side of the road while overtaking a first bus in front of him.

“This has given him no view of the summit.

“When Naimi reached the blind peak on the wrong side of the road, he hit Smith’s vehicle head-on, causing extensive damage to both vehicles.”

The road was closed for several hours while all five from both cars were taken to hospital.

Miss Smith was discharged after four days after suffering abdominal bruising and hematoma.

Miss McGuinness added: “Mr Abrar was found to have suffered a fractured left knee and tissue damage to his right shoulder and lower back.

“He had surgery and needed an orthopedic plate and screw fixation.

“He needed an extension splint for two weeks.”

He was also discharged after four days but readmitted 10 days later for a further operation.

Abrar has been left permanently scarred on his kneecap as a result of the injury.

Officers found that although Naimi, from the town’s Finnieston, owned the car, he had no insurance to drive it.
