Tom Holland will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a new standalone Spider-Man film, the actor confirmed Tuesday. The fourth film in Holland’s Spider-Man series will start filming in the summer of 2025, Holland said during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and co-created the upcoming Wonder Man for Marvel Studios, is taking over for director Jon Watts for Spider-Man 4, The Hollywood Reporter revealed last month.
The previous film in the franchise, Spider-Man: No Way Home, left off with Peter Parker tragically alone. His secret identity as Spider-Man (and all knowledge of Peter Parker’s existence) was wiped from the public consciousness by Dr. Strange’s magic.
Official details on where the story will go are scant, but Holland said in a recent appearance on the Rich Roll Podcast that he’d read a draft of Spider-Man 4 and was “really, really excited about it.”
“We have a draft, which is excellent,” Holland said when asked about continuing the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. “It needs work, but the writers are doing a great job. I read it three weeks ago and it really lit a fire in me. Zendaya and I sat down and read it together, and we at times were bouncing around the living room, like, This is a real movie worthy of the fans’ respect. But there’s a few things we need to figure out, before we can get that really going.”
The next Spider-Man movie may offer a more grounded, back-to-basics take on Marvel’s beloved wall-crawler. According to comments from Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige in 2022, Spider-Man is “going into the street-level heroes” pocket of the MCU, far away from the intergalactic and reality-blending adventures Holland’s Spider-Man has been known for. As No Way Home viewers are well aware, Peter’s friends have no memory of him, his sole remaining family member has died, and it’s unclear what his status as an Avenger is.
Holland made his MCU debut as Peter Parker in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. In addition to appearing in three standalone Spidey pics, Holland reprised the role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Producer Amy Pascal previously said that Holland would return to the role for a new series of films. “This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel — [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie,” Pascal told Fandango in an interview ahead of No Way Home’s release. “We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel, it just isn’t part of … we’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies.”
