Trader Joe’s shoppers rush to try brand new $2.99 snack – it’s a fresh take on an old favorite

The fruit has been vacuum-dried to make it easy to eat, while retaining the fruity taste.

Because it’s dried, the texture is crunchy, just like a bag of chips.

Some shoppers can’t get enough of it and are posting about their discovery on social media.

“Ok this is without a doubt the best thing I’ve ever had from Trader Joe’s it is sooo unbelievable,” wrote one fan on Reddit.

“I need to find this,” said another.

While a third said: “I like them. It reminded me of sweet plantain chips, except watermelon.”

The Crispy Dried Watermelon contains 150 calories per 1.41 oz bag and it takes 1.5 pounds of the real thing to make it, according to the pack.

Fruit is peeled then vacuum-dried to retain the flavor, while the dried strips resemble chips in their crunchiness.

In addition to eating the dried watermelon as a snack, the retailer suggests using it crushed in cocktails to flavor the edge of the glass or blending it with heavy cream for a fruity frosting.

So far the product is only available in store and cannot yet be found on the Trader Joe’s website.

Also posting on Reddit, one reviewer confirmed the texture is very crispy “and the consistency is almost like a tortilla chip, but lighter”.

Not everybody is convinced though and a number of shoppers found it too sweet.

“I’m going to finish the bag I got but won’t repurchase.

“Texture is actually great and crispy, but too sweet and doesn’t really taste like watermelon to me,” said one Reddit user.

Discontinued Trader Joe’s Products

Several Trader Joe’s items have been discontinued over the years, including:

  • Matcha Joe-Joe’s
  • Chile Lime Mayonnaise
  • Frozen Spinach Lasagna
  • Banana Waffles
  • Salted Caramel Gelato
  • Island Salsa
  • Cookie Butter Cheesecake
  • Chili Sesame Oil
  • Hi-Protein Veggie Burger

“Guys this is NOT good and i love watermelon. Watermelon shouldn’t be dry,” said another.

While a third person commented: “I’m a die hard freeze-dried fruit fan and these were just “meh” to me personally. I wanted to love them.”

The product is the latest addition to Trader Joe’s dried fruit line, which also includes Passion Fruit Rounds, Organic Dried Mango and Freeze Dried Tart Cherries.

The retailer has come under fire from shoppers recently for discontinuing some of their favorite products.

Fans of its Cheese Pastry Rolls were upset this month to discover they were no longer in store.

While its Enchilada Sauce is another discontinued item that’s getting customers worked up on Facebook.

In that case though it looks like a replacement version will be launched soon.
