San Diego — Syracuse tight end Dan Villari was ready to take a bullet for his head coach. Fran Brown didn’t let that happen.
Saying he was allergic to eggs, Brown chose not to participate Holiday Bowl’s usual egg nog dump following the Orange’s 52-35 win over Washington State.
With Villari volunteering as a stand-in for the coach, Brown ordered the Friday night dumping duties from celebrity dumper and competitive eater Joey Chestnut.
Brown took control of the bucket from the hot dog-eating champ and briefly looked like he might take aim at Villari before heaving the holiday drink at members of his team who had gathered behind him.
Most of the egg nut seemed to fall harmlessly to the ground.
Syracuse’s players had relished the thought of their trainer being drenched in dairy during the build-up to the game and debated whether Brown should suffer the indignity.
Syracuse defensive back Justin Barron said he wanted to make the dump. Others felt that Brown would be too quick – or too exhausted – to participate.
Brown made it clear the day before that unlike USC coach Lincoln Riley the previous year, he would not sit down and be a willing victim.
“I’m allergic to eggs, so Dave Villari takes the NIL deal,” Brown said during the build-up to the game.
“I think Meier’s Creek has already said they’d love for him to be the guy to do it. I’m allergic to eggs. I’d definitely love to pour the egg sugar on Dan, if I could.”
Brown famously said earlier this year that “winners get washed.”
The head coach had to be relieved which meant the season ended with a regular shower rather than an egg wash.
