Crumbs weighed 38 pounds when he was taken in by vets after being fed a diet of biscuits and soup his entire life.
Let’s take a look into the life of the world’s heaviest kitty.
Who was Crumbs?
Kroshik – the Russian word for Crumbs – was over three times the weight of a healthy domestic cat.
He was given his name due to his ability to hoover up scraps of food in his basement home in Perm, Russia.
It’s thought he found his way to the basement after being abandoned by his owners.
Hospital staff instantly took a shine to the ginger pussycat and started feeding him soup and biscuits.
Tragically he ballooned in size and got so heavy he couldn’t even walk.
The cat was taken to a specialist rehabilitation center to shed the pounds.
Crumbs was put on a strict diet and there wasn’t a biscuit or bowl of soup in sight.
Pictures from the vet center showed the fed-up-looking cat being put through his paces on a treadmill.
He was also put in a water tank to ease the strain on his leg joints due to his extreme weight.
How did he escape weight-loss camp?
Despite the impressive weight loss journey, Crumbs was caught trying to escape the center last month.
Poor Crumbs didn’t get very far, the moggy got stuck in a shoe rack with his tummy hanging out.
Rehabilitation specialist Ekaterina Bedakova says his escape bid was actually a sign that he is slowly improving.
She wrote in a Telegram post: “[Crumbs] caused a ruckus and escaped today. He’s already a very active guy.
“He was extremely displeased when we found him disguised as slippers, but… after a portion of food, he mellowed out.”
How did Crumbs die?
Doctors say he suddenly became ill overnight on October 26 and passed away just hours later.
His death was announced on social media through a touching post.
It said: “Kroshik passed away last night. This news echoes with a ringing emptiness in the heart.
“Yesterday Kroshik suddenly became ill. He began to choke.
“Until that moment, the doctors had never noticed signs of shortness of breath in him.
“We acted immediately – in half an hour Kroshik was already in the oxygen chamber.
“Gradually, his condition began to deteriorate and even the resuscitation efforts of the doctors could not help him.
“Dying, he was not alone. Until his very last breath, the best doctors fought for his life.”
Crumbs’ cause of death is yet to be announced but vets said he had “multiple growths in the spleen and metastases in other internal organs”.
