The New York Yankees missed out on re-signing superstar outfielder Juan Soto. Since then, they’ve picked up starting pitcher Max Fried in free agency and closer Devin Williams in a blockbuster trade. But they haven’t found an outfielder to replace Soto.
The most likely candidate to replace Soto seems to be Chicago Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger. Bellinger is being shopped in blockbuster trades, with the Yankees reportedly being the closest to a deal.
FanSided’s Michael Brakebill believes the Yankees need to land this trade for Bellinger to replace Soto. He recently predicted the Bronx Bombers would acquire the Cubs outfielder as the replacement for Soto.
“After missing on Juan Soto, the Yankees desperately need an outfielder to replicate at least some of his production. With an eye on the short porch in right, that production likely comes from a left-handed hitter. Therefore, the continued Cody Bellinger rumors make perfect sense if the Yankees and Cubs can figure it out financially,” Brakebill wrote. “It shouldn’t be long before this deal gets done. It feels like it’s about on the 10-yard line and heading for the endzone once Kyle Tucker passes his physical for the Cubs. The Yanks may have to pony and take on a bit more salary than they like, which shouldn’t be a huge concern if they want to win.”
New York needs this trade. Not only is Bellinger able to play outfield at an elite level, but he can double as a first baseman as well. The Yankees need both a first baseman and an outfielder, so acquiring Bellinger allows them to slot the Cubs star in at either spot. If New York whiffs on adding a first baseman, Bellinger can play there and the Yankees can add a different outfielder.
Either way, if the Yankees can acquire the former MVP without paying too much of his contract, they’ll be in a great spot. He seems to be the next guy on their radar and the trade could come to fruition soon.
