Yankees Two-Time All-Star Predicted to Ditch New York for AL Rival

Gleyber Torres has been a consistent presence for the New York Yankees since his big-league debut in 2018. He’s mostly manned second base, a spot that’s currently open on the Bombers’ roster since Torres is a free agent.

While the 28-year-old has said he’d like to remain in pinstripes for his entire career, it seems increasingly unlikely to happen. Several teams have been linked as potential landing spots for the right-handed slugger. Could the Seattle Mariners be the squad that lands him this winter?

MLB analyst Robbie Hyde is predicting that as the result of Torres’ time on the open market.

“(Torres) did hit a lot better in the second half after Aaron Boone moved him to the leadoff spot, and he did have a very good season back in 2023,” Hyde said. “I think the most obvious team would be the Mariners.”

Torres’ platform year in 2024 was disappointing. It included a .709 OPS with 15 home runs, 63 RBI and 80 runs scored in 665 plate appearances. However, it’s worth noting the infielder has racked up four seasons of 20-plus homers since 2018 and hit .273/.347/.453 for the Yankees in 2023.

His most recent production would also be a huge upgrade for the Mariners. Five players combined to hit .209/.301/.357 at second base for Seattle in 2024. Jorge Polanco took up most of the playing time, appearing in 110 games and posting a .651 OPS.

Tim Britton of The Athletic projected Torres would get a three-year, $45 million contract at the start of the offseason.
